During the first semester, this class works to greatly increase student’s skills in academic writing by focusing on a close examination of paragraph structure and organization, and how these skills relate to writing a full-length essay. The class will be continually learning and practicing the components of all essay forms: chronological order, process, cause/effect and logical division of ideas. The main text for this class is Longman’s Writing Academic English. In addition, students will be working from 504 Absolutely Essential Words, in order to supplement their vocabulary learning.

In the second semester, students work on developing and revising longer pieces of writing, including the writing of an extensive research essay and various creative works.
