ELD Biology

During the first semester, this class works on learning the English language through practical applications in biology. We focus on vocabulary, activities, and laboratory experiments throughout the semester to improve upon the students understanding of conversational English. Topics studied include chemistry, biochemistry, plant and animal cells, cell respiration, and photosynthesis. Students learn how to develop an hypothesis and conduct an experiment. Evaluations are based on homework, class participation, lab work, quizzes, tests, and a cumulative final exam.

During the second semester, students work on a more formal application of English in this course. We focus more on understanding and communicating concepts both written and orally. Topics studied include cell reproduction, genetics, evolution, ecology, anatomy and physiology. The year closes with a science fair in which students complete projects that incorporate what they learn throughout the year. Evaluations are based on homework, class participation, lab work, quizzes, tests, papers, and the final science project and paper.
